Swarg Rendezvous - Aug 15th 2009

This time, Aug 15th 2009 was one of its kind for those who witnessed the “Lightening Spirits “ event at Pudur community.. Usually we celebrate either at home or with friends or quietly enjoy the holiday. But this time, Swarg community, friends, wellwishers and people belonging to the community experienced what is called the true spirit of Independence day. Though we didn’t go there to preach anything but through our activities and arrangements, we hope to have created a fresh air of Liberation . Our acts, deeds, competitions were such that people came out to know the world around and participate in the specially organized activities like Rangoli, pot breaking, skit and dance.

Swarg members assembled at 9:30 am sharp before which the nature had its beautiful setting of weather and it let the rangoli participants kickstart their campaign. Special judges were invited who evaluated based on certain criteria. It ended at 10 o clock. After which the most anticipated event of the day” pot (path) breaking” started… Though initially, people in the community were very reluctant, later on our Swarg member K.S. Saravana kumar showed the way for everyone by hitting the pot with water splashing all around. Quite a magnificient scene it was!!!!… The arrangements made by our co – ordinator Mr. Karthick was spot on as there was no lag during the event.

Special "vande mataram" rendition by Swargian Ms.Chitra(CTS) gathered a lot of attention. The arena came to a stand still to witness such a beautiful voice. Afterwhich, special skit and dance performances were performed by children of our tuition center. A week of practice, dedication to perform before swarg members, to prove a point to the world, they graced the event with a top notch performance. Only drawback was the lack of space but next time, we hope to rectify it by alternate arrangements.
We intended to create awareness about our community center in that area, and from the feedback we got, I should say that we succeeded in that attempt. Almost 30 women had enrolled their names for Tailoring sessions and it kickstarted from yesterday(Wednesday 19/8/09). The total attendance for aug 15th celebration alone touched 50 apart from onlookers.
Thanks everyone especially Mr kartick(Project co-ordinator) for entire management, Mr varadan, teacher of our community center, Swarg Members ( as always, your presence ,despite very few days that you all get to spend your time at home) ,friends and wellwishers for making this event a grand success.
Keep your heads high and march towards glory.

Swarg on HINDU -NXG DAILY

http://www.go-nxg.com/?p=5278
Good Morning . Happy Moment for all of us. Swarg recognized for its good efforts in Hindu News Daily (NXG supplement - page no 9 , Dated 23/7/09). It reads like "YOUTH FOR CHANGE"....Let us keep up the expectations.

Youth for change
INITIATIVE Giving back to society need not be a faraway dream. MADHUMITHA SRINIVASAN

“Individually how many can I help? – unless of course, I have all the powers in the country” asks Sarath, a young IT professional. Inspired by the Tamil movie “Katradhy Tamizh”, Sarath and a group of friends got together to form Swarg, an organisation that would serve as a platform for the youth who want to serve society but don’t know how to go about it.
Noble deeds
Swarg, which recently celebrated its first anniversary, started off with eight people but is now teeming with more than 300 members, most of whom are young IT professionals hoping to give something back to society. The name Swarg, meaning heaven, was chosen out of a list of many suggested names for want of a word that would signify their positive outlook on society. And that’s just what they have been working towards. In Chennai, Swarg has been providing food for the underprivileged at the Good Life Centre and Udhavum Ullam. 30 scholarships worth more than Rs. 1.5 lakhs will be awarded to students including those pursuing engineering. And a total of about 3500 notebooks were distributed in various corporation and municipal schools in Broadway, Veerapuram, Mogappair and in a friend’s village in Andhra Pradesh.
In Mysore, where they have members, they conduct weekend classes for 15 underprivileged kids and have also helped some financially. Their success story was there for all to see during their first anniversary celebration when it was announced that Elango, one of the students whose education they have funded, is now placed with IBM. Moreover, 30 plus scholarships are in the pipeline in Mysore. Swarg lays great emphasis on education because “we feel we can make a change only through good education. Later on, the ones we have been helped will be in a position to help others” explains Sarath. Right now, they are also branching out to include environmental issues, and to start off, the guests invited for their anniversary celebrations were gifted a sapling each. It was appreciated by all the guests who were more than happy to receive a live sapling than a bouquet of flowers.
It’s not about being a part of an organisation and serving society, you can take the initiative yourself as well. “Every well-earning individual can support the education of one underprivileged child, and each family can try to adopt a child – provide for his/her education, food and other basic needs” suggests Sarath. “And it’s not just about money. One can donate time, ideas, share enthusiasm, happiness and also initiate activities. Our most active member is actually a person who hasn’t spent money”, says Sarath. How about a Community Center?

Here is some good news for all of you. Swarg has ventured into a new program where A tuition center, Children club, and parent club co-exist . In a nutshell, we have formed a community center, which is available all the time for the people living in this community. The area we selected is Pudur Slum area in Ashok Nagar.
Our Project coordinator is Mr. K. P.Karthik who has been running this tuition center for quite some time but this whole community center concept is a Pilot project for both of us. we are very confident that the project will be successful and that we can replicate this model in many down-trodden areas of Chennai and elsewhere.

In the initial phase of discussion 1 month back, we were involved in planning the intricacies of the program.
Last week on Sat, we meet again on the location where a Magazine (Pudiya Thalaimurai )editor covered our story of " Community Center" . They were visibly impressed and so were Swarg members.

What we have done for the past one month?
1. We have formed the library for children, and elder people.
2. Set up 2 computers for Computer coaching and teaching via computer presentations.
3. Set up a tailoring unit(2 sewing machines) for SHG formation and also hired a teacher for this training.
4. Hired 2 teachers to give extra focus on the children in the evenings and a librarian who will go to each house in that community and read a story from a book and tell the importance of educating a child and parental guidance.

Weekend Plan:
1. Computer training
2. Spoken English
3. Sports
4. Meditation
5. personality Development.

There are few volunteers who are willing to come and teach here . They are
1. Mr. Manoj - A project associate in IIT Madras.
2. Mr. Kannan - Whom we met at the community center last week.
We are working out a plan to meet the schedule to render our service.

We wholeheartedly welcome you all to the Swarg Team. Lead the change that u have always dreamt of through Swarg.
Let us make this program a successful and a sustainable one.

Post your comments on the story......

Swarg Science Club !!!!!!!!

In association with

Why ?

Though our current society talks\implements “Education for All”. The output is just “School for All”

Every kid in the country should be forced to go to school but not forced to study.

Even the well established private schools don’t give its 100% on student engagement activities. In a typical school more than 50% of kids in each class live a mechanical life without knowing what they are studying or for what they are studying. To address this....

What?
Science club, that will let its members to have fun with science and learn science while having fun.

Vision:

2. No teaching
3. Make each and every student as a member

How?
1. Inauguration with "Miracle Show" on 15-Aug-09
2. Follow up sessions and name list collection for membership
3. Monthly twice the club meets for activities, updates & planning the tasks for next meeting.
4. In the initial stage (first month) no membership fee will be collected, later Rs 1-5 may be collected as membership fee and the school should give Rs 3-5 for each kid or it should provide the materials need for the club.
5. Each standard will have their own activities tat differs from other standards.
6. In the Half yearly holidays, science camps will be conducted.
7. In the mid of Feb'10, science exhibition has been planned.
8. Few more activities are planned for the due course...

Others:
Depending on the students current performance and interest, other clubs will be started.

Any thing more?
In need of 1. volunteers & 2. Ideas

Thanks.

Good Schooling is not only for the kids who are good at......

Sports & Games are not only for strong & smart!!!

Arts is not only for talented!!!

Exams & Quizzes are not only for intelligent!!!

Good Schooling is not only for the kids who are good at any of the above!!!

It should be given for all!!!!!!!!!

Do you know?

Though our current society talks\implements “Education for All”. The output is just “School for All”

Every kid in the country should be forced to go to school but not forced to study.

Even the well established private schools don’t give its 100% on student engagement activities. In a typical school more than 50% of kids in each class live a mechanical life without knowing what they are studying or for what they are studying.

Our Idea!!!!!

As a part of model & mentoring wing activities, Swarg is adopting schools where it mentors the school management & teachers, the best practices of schooling and student engagement activities.

With respect to student engagement activities, we first gauge the school that we’ve adopted. Depending on the current infrastructure & opportunities given to the students, we start different kinds of clubs in the school.

Swarg in Action:

Incase if the students group\school don’t have even the basic things then we start children club. At times there is a need to educate the parent as well.

Eg: Our children club in “Community Center” project in Pudur Slum area in Ashok Nagar, Chennai. More>>

There are places where kids have opportunities to few extracurricular activities but still not aware of what they are studying or for what they are studying.

To face this challenge we are starting a science club in the schools . More>>
